I overspent this holiday season and now need to find ways to trim my budget for 2017. Should I raise the deductible on my car insurance?  – Tracy W., Needville, TX

Dear Tracy:

After the holidays, many folks start looking for ways to save money. To ensure you are maximizing your coverage and meeting your insurance needs, we encourage you to review your insurance portfolio annually.

Changing your deductibles might be part of this process. Increasing deductibles can reduce your premiums and may save you money in the long run. But is it a good idea? Here are some things to consider.

Increasing your deductible will reduce your premiums. For example, if you pay $225 a month for auto insurance with a $50 comprehensive and $100 collision deductible, increasing your deductible to $250 comprehensive and $1,000 collision could save you up to $75 per month. That is a $900 savings over the course of the year.

If you raise your collision deductible to $1,000 and have an accident the next day, you must pay the $1,000. Can you afford it? Keep in mind these deductibles will apply even the damage done to your vehicle is not your fault.

When should you remove your deductible?
There does come a time when it is not cost effective to maintain any comp/collision insurance. As vehicles age, the depreciated value continues to get lower. At some point you must consider the cost of insurance vs. what you might get in return. For example, if you pay $200 for a six month policy, but your car has a depreciated value of $1,500, the cost benefit may not be worth the insurance. In this example your annual insurance cost is around 37% of your vehicles value.

Your deductible and limits are a personal decision and your financial situation plays a part in the deductibles and coverage you choose. Contact your TXINS agent today to review your insurance portfolio. We will provide the information you need to make an informed decision.

In the mid-1800s Katy, Texas was known as Cane Island, named for the creek running through the area. The creek was filled with cane, presumed to have been planted to aid in fur trapping. This “island” of cane was surrounded by an ocean of tall grass; thus the area became known as Cane Island.

In 1845, James J. Crawford received a land grant that included this area. But the hot summers, thick mud, and relentless mosquitoes made it difficult to attract settlers. In 1893, the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad began laying rails through Cane Island and began operation in 1895. In January 1896, the town of Katy was named based on the MKT Railroad, which was called “the Katy” by railroad officials, and it developed around the original train stop and railroad tracks.

Katy has grown tremendously in size over the years and boasts excellent schools and opportunity for economic growth and development. Located along I-10 just west of Houston, the Greater Katy Area is the intersection of what three Texas counties? Email your answer to Kara Wood. If you are one of the first three people to answer correctly, you’ll win a full-sized Texas flag!
