TXINS December E-News: Auto Theft During the Holidays, Agency Happenings, Texas Trivia & More!

Auto Theft During the Holidays

With Thanksgiving in the rearview and Christmas steadily approaching, 2017 is coming to a close.

While the holiday season approaches and the year winds down, it’s crucial to remember that thieves are particularly active during the holidays. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), a total of 22,705 vehicles were reported stolen on the 11 holidays covered in their 2016 report. The data is pulled from the National Crime Information Center’s stolen vehicle file, which showed a total of 803,719 vehicle thefts for the year.

Many of the thefts occurred in large states. California was the number one state with the most holiday vehicle thefts in 2016 with 5,285. It was followed, in descending order, by Texas (2,121); Florida (1,397); Washington (889) and Georgia (763).

While many feel the spirit of giving during the holidays, car thieves are in the business of taking.

Which holidays rank as the biggest threat to your car’s safety?

11. Christmas Day: Vehicle thefts: 1,664
10. Thanksgiving: Vehicle thefts: 1,777
9. Valentine’s Day: Vehicle thefts: 1,789
8. President’s Day: Vehicle thefts: 2,008
7. Christmas Eve: Vehicle thefts: 2,054
6. Independence Day: Vehicle thefts: 2,086
5. New Year’s Eve: Vehicle thefts: 2,110
4. Memorial Day: Vehicle thefts: 2,139
3. New Year’s Day: Vehicle thefts: 2,242
2. Labor Day: Vehicle thefts: 2,258
1. Halloween: Vehicle thefts: 2,578

The latest report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) identifies the 10 most stolen vehicles in the U.S. The report examines vehicle theft data submitted by law enforcement to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and determines the vehicle make, model and model year most reported stolen in 2016.

While thefts are down since their all-time high in 1992, thousands of vehicles continue to be stolen each year because owners leave their keys or fobs in the vehicles. For owners with cars which predate more modern anti-theft measures, “The Club” is an effective theft deterrent.

America’s 10 Most Stolen Vehicles:

10. 2000 Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee
9. 2008 Chevrolet Impala
8. 2015 Toyota Corolla
7. 2001 Dodge Pick-Up (Full Size)
6. 2015 Nissan Altima
5. 2016 Toyota Camry
4. 2004 Chevrolet Pick-Up (Full Size)
3. 2006 Ford Pick-Up (Full Size)

The Commercial Lines Department attended a Texas Mutual Education Day on November 8 at the Wyden in Houston. The team learned about the importance of appropriately classifying a risk, business entities, what’s combinable and not, experience rating, and endorsements for Workers Compensation.
