Hurricane Insurance: Four Things You Need to Know

Hurricane season is almost upon us! Now is the time for you to review your homeowners insurance policy to make sure you and your family have the right protection in place in case you get hit hard by a windstorm.

Before you update or purchase your first hurricane, or windstorm, insurance policy, there are a few things you need to know:

  • If your home is located in one of the counties along the Gulf, your homeowners insurance policy will exclude coverage for windstorm damage. You can buy a policy from the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association to get the coverage you need.
  • Regardless of where your home is located, you will not be protected against water surges and other external causes of flooding unless you purchase a separate flood insurance policy.
  • Both windstorm and flood insurance policies have waiting periods for when you can purchase them or when they will be effective after purchase. What does this mean exactly? The sooner you buy your policy, the better off you will be!
  • If you’re a business owner and you work out of your home, you will need an additional policy, called business interruption insurance, to cover any lost income caused by a big storm.

All of this information boils down to one point: Review your insurance to make sure you have the best protection in place. If you would like help going over your current coverage, contact our Texas agency for help.
